I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving and know how grateful I am for everyone one of you guys. I feel like Black Friday is the one time of the year where everyone is united under one wonderful, very American spectrum with two extremes: you’ve either been snatching Black Friday sales since 12:01 AM or, if you’re like me, have been lazing around the house in a food coma with no intention of doing anything remotely productive today. Whoops?
Yet no matter what side of the spectrum you’re at currently, you’ve most likely experienced burnout at one point and not just during the holiday season. We’ve all been there – you’ve been staring at your lack of an essay for hours already and still have no idea what your thesis will be; you got an urgent text or important email but have no idea how to reply because you’re too overwhelmed to process what they’re asking or it’s 11:56 at night and you physically feel like you won’t be able to make the deadline.
And that, my friend, is what happens when you get hit in the face with burnout, AKA the emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive stress. Burnout causes you to be drained in every aspect of life due to the constant demands that you continually take on but aren’t able to complete.
Burnout is one of the most dangerous mental places you can be in and as someone who has experienced it on numerous occasions, it can also be one of the most terrifying. It causes you to feel like you are worthless and have nothing more to give, which, in turn, can result in even unhealthier behaviors or mental issues. I wouldn’t even wish this on my worst enemy because it is a hell that no one deserves to EVER go through
…and that’s why I compiled this list of the top five things you can start doing now to make sure you never get there.
